It's Official: CBD & THCV Regrow Hair

Posted by LR Staff on Jun 9th 2022

***Note: we do not offer any topical hair products at the current time, but did want to highlight ongoing research on these amazing natural cannabinoids.  Stay tuned as our lineup is always growing!!***

Hair loss (Androgenetic Alopecia or APA) is a natural part of life for about 50% of men and 20% of adult women.  There are 2 FDA-approved medications available, one topical (finasteride aka Propecia) and one oral (minoxidil aka Rogaine).  Neither is fully effective and both have side effects.  The only permanent solution is hair transplantation ('hair plugs') that requires a lengthy surgical procedure with aesthetically varied outcomes.  Laser and light therapies are common but yet to offer conclusive results.

In a 2021 study, Dr. Gregory Smith and John Satino used a topical CBD solution on APA at a hair loss clinic, basing the effort on prior research:

CBD works through the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the body and has novel effects on hair follicle elongation and hair matrix keratinocytes activated through ECS receptors in the hair follicle cells (Bíróet al., 2009).  As such, the therapeutic effects of CBD would complement the physiologic effects of [current pharmaceutical] therapies...

There are a substantial number of CB1 and CB2 receptors on various cell lines within the skin (Tóth et al., 2019). CB1 receptors are well expressed in the hair follicle cells...

Studies have shown that the ECS is a key player in hair follicle cell growth control. (Bíró et al., 2006; Telek et al., 2007;Tóth et al., 2019).

CB1 antagonists, such as CBD and tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) and cannabidivarin (CBDV) can be used to promote hair growth (Telek et al.,2007).

Thirty-five (28 male, 7 female) subjects participated in the 6-month study and none were on Propecia or Rogaine.

From the study results:

On average there was statistically significant 93.5% increase in hair after 6 months. All subjects had some regrowth.  There were no reported adverse effects.

In a new case study on 31 subjects which has not yet been published, Dr. Smith summarizes the results with THCV:

On average, growth was 164% more than baseline, ranging from 31% to 2000% increase in nonvellus hair after six months of once-daily use. This case study suggests that topical hemp extract high in THCV, CBDV and CBD is associated with significant hair regrowth benefits in both men and women with AGA. This was a follow-up study to another study on the effects of CBD for hair regrowth, which had promising results, but with the addition of Varins to the topical formulation, subjects saw twice the amount of regrowth than with CBD alone.

***We will look for the full study results and offer a topical THCV product as soon as possible.***

In other THCV current research news:

  • There is a recently completed broad clinical trial for the basic safety and bio-action of THCV, no results yet published
  • 2 Type II diabetes studies are ongoing

Hopefully more THCV research will be conducted soon and we will share it when we see it!
